In the beginning was the Story. Some say it was the Word. But they are referring to that great creative power that changes everything it touches. Although Word is a good name for it, others have named it, with equal truth, as Music, Song, or Dance. So Story, which can include all these others, seems the best name.
And the Story realised that it needed a place in which to spread itself. So, in a rush of energy, it began to create particles, stars, galaxies. And then it went on to create planets, worlds full of mountains, rivers, seas, clouds.
Now that the Story had a place, it needed characters. So it created living beings, quick ones like may-flies, slow ones like turtles, huge ones like whales, tiny ones like lichen. And it woke up the spirits of what it had created earlier, rocks, rivers, winds, and even the planets and stars themselves. And it was not only on Earth that it created its characters. Nor was it only in the physical world that they existed. Dragons, vampires, elves, brownies, boggarts, and even Martians and hobbits found they were a part of the Story. And all these beings began to play their parts in the Story. Some of them — the humans were among those — began to sense parts of the Story and to tell parts to each other. And some even began to see that their lives were part of a story. A few sensed the existence of the Story itself, and realised that they were participants in this great Story.

In all the worlds stories were told and stories were lived. One story would be told or lived many times in many ways — sometimes the tellings of a single story would be so different that they seemed to have nothing in common, yet they were all forms of one story which was itself part of the great Story.
